Spring Break Preparation for Travel to Romania

This is a recommended list of activities to complete over Spring Break to ensure successful preparation for the May Travel Course.

1)      VERY IMPORTANT: If you haven’t already, please respond to the scheduling inquiry Diana sent over the weekend (in case you lost it, here is the link again: http://doodle.com/2ab3u8uc6476m3d5).

2)      Passport-related:

  1. Scan the ID pages of your passport and e-mail the document (1) to yourself,  (2) to me, and (3) to someone else you trust (in case something happens with your passport while we are overseas, you’ll need the copy).
  2. Submit a copy of your passport ID pages to Scott Couchman in the International Education Office, if you haven’t already done so.
  3. If you do not have your passport yet, get a status update and find out what exactly you need to do to receive it by May.

3)      Credit card related:

  1. Call your credit card company and let them know of your travel plans, so that they don’t block your card when you start using it overseas.
  2. b.      Optional: find out what the international usage fees are for your credit card and possibly look into better options

4)      Health-related:

  1. Vaccinations: While no vaccinations are required for travel to Romania, consider the CDC recommendations (http://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/destinations/romania.htm).  You may want to get some of these vaccines when you are at home; on campus, Health Services can help; in Roanoke/Salem, Carillion has an international travel clinic that provides this service.
  2. Prescription medication: Discuss your travel plans with your doctor and make sure that you are prepared to bring along on the trip sufficient amounts of the prescription medicine you need.
  3. Allergies: with assistance from your doctor (and, maybe, your parents), put together a list of known allergies

5)      Travel-related:

  1. Travel to and from Dulles: make plans for your travel to Dulles, where you will meet the rest of the class.  We are departing on Monday, May 13, 5:55PM, on Delta flight 9385 to Amsterdam.  We are returning on Friday, May 31, 3:10PM, on Delta flight 9384 from Amsterdam.  On May 13, you will need to arrive at the airport no later than 3:30PM (assuming that the flight details don’t change between now and then).  Plan accordingly.
  2. Luggage: start thinking about what suitcases / bags you might want to bring along.  Delta allows for one carry-on bag plus a purse/laptop bag; and a free checked bag (the second checked bag would cost $100).  For complete and official information on Delta baggage policy, check this link: https://www.delta.com/content/www/en_US/traveling-with-us/baggage/before-your-trip.html .
  3. Optional: Frequent flyer info: if you are not part of a frequent flyer program, possibly look into signing up for one.
